EL PASO-- A man was caught in the act by El Paso police in the early hours of Friday morning as he scoped out his targets to burglarize.

EPPD officers responded to the blocks of Tierra Nevada and Tierra Tigre about a suspicious person. Officers were told by a witness that a man wearing dark clothing was looking into cars with a flashlight.

Officers began to search the area, and spotted 23-year-old Nicholas Steinmeyer walking in the area of Tierra Nevada. Officers watched Steinmeyer walked through surrounding neighborhoods looking into vehicles.

Steinmeyer was followed to the 3100 block of Tierra Rio by officers, where Steinmeyer opened a tan 2006 Ford Explorer that had been left unlocked. Police said they then watched Steinmeyer go through the vehicle and then walk south on Tierra Rio.

The officers --whom were wearing plain clothes with their badges still visible -- identified themselves as EPPD officers and confronted Steinmeyer, ordering him to stop.

Steinmeyer then ran off, and after a short foot pursuit, he was arrested and booked into the El Paso County jail for burglary of a vehicle and evading arrest.

His bond was set at $2,250.
