The program was supposed to go on for another four months.
But less than a week after it started, the government has suspended it.
The cash for clunkers program has been a successful and is using up the money at a record pace.
The decision to suspend the program early comes amid concerns that the one billion dollars set aside for the rebate incentives is going too quickly.
The program offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 to $4,500 in rebates toward a new, more fuel efficient vehicle.
But the transportation department today called Congress to let them know they are halting the program three months early.
They said through Wednesday more than 22,000 vehicles had been purchased with nearly 96 million dollars spent.
But dealers are raising concerns that those numbers may be even higher in reality, because of large backlogs in the system.
Today we visited a car dealership and we found several people taking advantage of the deal.
