Car Bursts Into Flames, Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DWI
EL PASO — Police arrested a suspected drunk driver after he wrecked his car, then tried to run away after it caught fire.
The driver lost control on Lee Trevino at approximately 1:45 a.m. Tuesday. The driver jumped the concrete median then the car burst into flames.
The driver got out and tried to run away, but officers caught up with him shortly after. Video from the scene shows the driver stumbling and having difficulty standing up as he spoke with police.
Irving Marquez was driving through the area and noticed the smoke, so he stopped and approached the driver.
"I asked him if he was okay or not. He said he was intoxicated, and was pretty careless about what had happened. He just wanted to get away. He offered me some money to take him somewhere. I told him nope," said Marquez.
Marquez said there was fluid dripping from the car and noticed a spark. Then the car burst into flames and he feared the car was going to explode.
"I kept telling the dispatcher it was about to explode if someone didn't come because little by little, we could hear little sparks. I guess brought on through the engine compartment, through the dash and I'm pretty sure it would have exploded," he said.
Firefighters were able to control the flames within about 20 minutes. There were no injuries reported.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of DWI.
