CANUTILLO, Texas — Canutillo ISD wants as many people as possible involved in a new school building that's been a long time coming.
District officials and parents are excited about the possibilities.
"We're absolutely thrilled about building our new school and finally getting it off the ground," said Superintendent Dr. Damon Murphy.
"This would be helpful,” said parent Dayana Callanan. “In this area we don't have a school close by and that would help parents have more time for other activities."
The school will be for students in Prekindergarten through 8th grade. It's going up in the Cimarron Subdivision.
Right now, students riding a school bus take up to an hour to get to reach their school.
"It's going to serve an area of Canutillo ISD in which currently we don't have any schools,” said Dr. Murphy. “So it's a great opportunity for our east side residents to get their own campus."
A military wife, and mother of two young children, is looking forward to having a true neighborhood school.
“It's much more comfortable for me just like it would be for the other parents in the neighborhood,” said Callanan. “If a school is close or far, we all have to enroll our kids, but the intention of having something closer makes things easier."
The district is hosting two meetings this week so parents and community members can voice their opinions on what they expect for the new school.
"They'll be able to share their thoughts, their hopes, what they want to see in the architecture and what they want to see in the design of the school,” said Dr. Murphy. “We want to get that community input."
The new school should open in 2014.
The first community meeting is at Alderete Middle School at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The second will be at Jose Damian Elementary School on Thursday at 6 p.m.
