A fire in Canutillo leaves a family with seven kids without a home.

The fire started at around 1p.m. on the 7400 block of Mindoro Place in Canutillo on Sunday.

"It was really stressful to see that it was burning and we couldn't do anything," said homeowner Luz Zavala.

She lives at the home with her seven kids. Luckily, no one was home when the fire started.

Luz said they had been staying at her sister’s house in Anthony and came home earlier in the day.

She said they all left to get some food, and when they got back, they saw smoke.

"We thought it was the neighbors,” explained Martha Zavala, Luz’s sister. “But no, it was the storage room."

Fire investigators say bad electrical wires are likely to blame for the fire.

The home isn't a total loss, suffering mostly smoke damage. But Luz and her family still won't be able to live here until the damage to the storage room is fixed.

"It’s going to take some time,” said Luz. “I'm telling you. We don't have the money or anything to fix it. We need to fix the electric thing and everything. They have to come and check again to let us live here."

West Valley Fire Department Assistant chief, Boyd Smith, said the damage could have been a lot worse. The family did the right thing by calling 9-1-1 right away.

"Some people try to put it out themselves with a garden hose or something,” Smith said. “Sometimes that works. A lot of times it doesn't. The fire is hidden from you. The garden hose is only going to reach so far. While you are doing that, the fire is progressing."

As for Luz, she is just thankful no one was hurt in this terrifying ordeal.

Investigators estimate the damage to be about $10,000. Luz said she and her family will stay at her sister’s home in Anthony until they can repair the damage.
