Socorro, TX (KTSM) — Four different people and four different backgrounds... all running for the City of Socorro mayor. If you haven't made your decision yet, here's a little more information on the four candidates running for Mayor.
Jesus Ruiz has run for the position twice. Gamaliel "Gama" Mendez owns a local business called "The Hope Coffee Shop." Gumersindo "Gume" Cardoso is a businessman who has lived in the city for seven years. Igor Flores, who was unable to speak with us in person, is a military veteran.
We asked each candidate who was available why they're running.
"I feel that Socorro needs a positive change. We've had a lot of scandals over the last couple of years and I feel like people are tired of Gandara politics and the people deserve better," Jesus Ruiz said.
"I decide to enjoy to the community and try to help and clear everything that I can," Gumersindo "Gume" Cardoso explained.
"I really want to stand up against this rubble. I really want to make a difference, you know, be the light, you know. Be the person that wants to make a change," Gamaliel "Gama" Mendez told us.
We also asked how their background will help them run the city.
"I've been very active in the community. Going to City Council meetings and so I think that knowledge of what is going on in Socorro will help me identify our problems and know how to solve them," Ruiz said.
"The community to enjoy the together to start comprise to resolve any problems," Cardoso said.
"I've studied business administration which has enabled me to learn about business and how to administer a business," Mendez told us.
In this political climate, it's essential each of the candidates bring what is unique about them to the table.
"My conduct, my morals, my ethical behavior. My faith," Mendez said.
"Ideas together, teams together, and work for the community. Not work for our own selves," Cardoso explained.
"We have to know what is going on in Socorro, identify our problems and know the ways that we can solve them and that's what I bring to the table is that experience that I have," Ruiz told us.
