Bull rider from Eastern New Mexico University killed during practice
Portales, NM — A bull rider for the Eastern New Mexico University rodeo team died on Tuesday night after a bull stepped on him during practice.
The University confirmed the 20-year-old's death on their Facebook page Wednesday afternoon by posting a statement saying "Eastern New Mexico University is saddened by the death of a member of the ENMU rodeo team. Our thoughts are with those affected."
Emergency personnel arrived at the Lewis Cooper Rodeo Arena on campus and treated 20-year-old Irvyng Urquijo at the scene. He was transported to Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales where he was pronounced dead.
According to KOB in Albuquerque, Urquijo was a 2011 graduate of Springer HS in New Mexico and was studying animal and dairy science.
