LAS CRUCES - This weekend, Mike Luna was driving home late at night when he saw what he thought was a large, dirty dog on Highway 478, not too far from Mesilla Park. After a closer look, the "dog" was actually a brown bear. Luna watched the bear walk through a muddy orchard, jump a fence, climb a light pole, then run across the road.

Luna called 9-1-1, and after meeting with officials, they confirmed what he already knew. The tracks in the mud and across the road were that of a brown bear. Luna describes the bear as about 5 feet long and skinny. He estimated that it weighs about 200 to 250 lbs.

He tells Newschannel 9 that other people in the area also reported seeing the bear

ANYONE can google New Mexico Brown Bear, and see that New Mexico does have brown bears, maybe not as huge as a grizzly but still brown, i saw blonde brears as well or is the google search wrong as well....?

A brown bear? Is this witness kidding? Maybe he meant a black bear, which are found in the surrounding forest areas. The brown bear is found in the upper latitudes and known as the coastal brown bear or the inland grizzly. I really doubt that a brown bear would have traveled that far to venture into our area.
