EL PASO - A new doll may hit toy store shelves soon that teaches young girls how to breast feed. We asked local health experts and parents how they feel about this new toy.

The website for the doll tells girls to put the baby's mouth next to the flowers on the magic top, and she'll start to suckle and swallow, just like a real baby. And it burps.

The El Paso Department of Public Health, which just rolled out its own breastfeeding campaign this month, says at least this doll promotes something natural, not an unhealthy body image like so many other dolls.

"With this doll, what better example?" asked WIC Services Manager Joel Olivas. "You're teaching kid that breastfeeding is normal, we are already doing that by giving bottles to dolls."

"We should be better educated about its value and as a society much more accepting," said family psychologist Richard Patterson. He says while it's never too early to talk to children about their bodies, this doll may take it a step too far.

"I just don't know that giving little 8 year old girls breast feeding baby dolls is the best way to do it," he said.

Moms we talked to aren't sold on it either.

"You're not letting the child be a child, you're teaching them too young what to expect in the future," said Julissa Navarette.

The company says on its website that the doll is meant to teach nurturing skills and that they don't understand why it has created such controversy. Dr. Patterson says the responsibility lies with the parents, and that toys should not be an impulse buy.

"We need to think about what we're doing, if we buy a child a toy, what do we want them to learn from it?"

So sorry to see the generally negative comments regarding a totally natural thing.
Breastfeeding is a completely normal event, and until we started being prudish about our breasts, and embraced formula as a lifestyle choice instead of the LEAST WORST option for feeding babies, children and adults alike would have been able to observe this wonderful life-giving bond between a mother and her infant.

I think it is COMPLETELY irresponsible and ignorant the way NC9 has been reporting this story. You've given the subject matter a negative connotation from day 1 and now your viewers have responded accordingly. This doll is no different than any other bottle fed doll on the market and solely teaches children how to feed a baby the same way mothers have been doing it since the beginning of time. Shame in you for discouraging children as well as mothers from breastfeeding. Educate yourselves NC9.

its a stupid doll...breastfeeding is not all its cracked up to be

stop trying to raise girls to become unwed, underaged mothers, we don't need to produce more casey anthony's, adrea yates, susan smiths and the like. children born to girls too young suffer too much already.

children should be allowed to their childhoods and keep their innocence for as long as possible.

No evidence that casey anthony, andrea yates or susan smith ever played with a breast feeding doll or that yates or smith married too young. They were 37 and 24 respectively. How would teaching nurturing a baby encourage a girl to lose their innocence? I can understand your objection about this toy but at least argue against it with facts and not senseless innuendos.

I agree. I also agree with Dr. Patterson in that, it is the responsibility of the parents to teach the child how to play and which toys to play with. I think that little girls will learn this naturally from watching their mothers nurse younger siblings. I also think that its sad that toy-makers - or society in general- is having to re-teach the children of the world how to be grown ups because there are so few responsible ones left. :(

While I agree with you that there are so fewer responsible grown ups, having a doll around the house that teaches nurturing to a child is not a bad thing. Little girls that play with dolls don't grow up any quicker than those that do. Little boys that play with toy guns don't necessarily grow up to be deviant. The key is what is taught with the toy. It is a tool that can be used for good or bad. Like you said, society in general dictates how the child will learn responsibility.

How about Barbies beau Ken showing how to use a condom?

this is just sick let kids be kids why teach theme this now they should only experience this when there mature not when there kids themselves this is taking it way to darn far.

Terrible idea, just the wrong information at the wrong time for these girls. Stop pushing them to grow up, keep is simple teach them the right information at the right time. What's next: The Future, Year-2020, New toy Barbie/Ken XXX, Slogan: we practice in intimate situations safely, buy us now... This world is going down from here.

I hope stores here in EL Paso dont sell them..i think they're stupid dolls.I'm tired of these people pushing breast feeding ..breast isn't always best..

"..breast isn't always best.." Really? Has been for thousands of years. Breasts is Best. Hmmmmm.
