Massachusetts man involved in planning terror attacks at U.S. malls charged...
Boston authorities have charged a Massachusetts man with conspiring with others to carry out terror attacks against Americans in shopping malls and against the U.S. military in Iraq.
Federal prosecutors maintain 27-year-old Tarek Mehanna and his co-conspirators wanted to get weapons in order to attack malls, but ditched the plan when the weapons couldn't be purchased.
They also claim Mehanna worked with others from 2001 to 2008 on a conspiracy that targeted to potentially harm prominent U.S. politicians.
Mehanna also was arrested last year allegedly for lying about a man who trained with Al-Qaeda members with the goal of overthrowing the Somali government.
Federal prosecutors say at least one of the alleged co-conspirators is cooperating in the ongoing investigation.
