EL PASO — Mega Millions is causing a Lottery frenzy in the borderland as it is across the country. All convenience stores are seeing a huge jump in business.
These were Friday night's winning numbers: 24-4-23-38-46.
"I really don't buy the Lotto that often but today is a special day, I guess," said Joe Tarin.
The Mega Millions jackpot has grown to $640 million. After taxes, it's a cash payout of $462 million. People in the borderland were rushing to get their tickets. Co-workers are pooling their money to beat the odds of winning, which is one in 175 million.
"We went in an office pool so we were excited to see if we were the lucky bunch,” said Jessica Hernandez. “We all pitched in $5 so hopefully here are the lucky numbers."
Employees at the Chevron gas station in Downtown El Paso have been busy all day selling and printing tickets.
"They're getting lots and lots of Mega Millions and this morning we had one man bought $500 worth of Mega Millions," said assistant manager Maricela Perez.
As of Friday afternoon, the store sold more than $2,000 of Mega Millions tickets. The assistant manager said it may have something to do with the luck it had back in 2004.
"They still remember from the last time we had a grand prize winner," said Perez.
That winner walked away with $145 million and the store collected a half million just for selling the winning ticket. A lot of people are feeling lucky.
"I think we have a great chance, we have positive attitudes and we're all excited we put that positive energy for us to be the winners," said Hernandez.
