Blue Turf Coming to Canutillo

News

POSTED: Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - 1:44pm

UPDATED: Thursday, August 11, 2011 - 11:50am

CANUTILLO - The opponents of the Canutillo High School Eagles will get the blues when they next play at Coach Julius and Irene Lowenberg Stadium starting this fall.

The Canutillo School Board voted unanimously in favor of a new artificial football turf that will mostly be blue instead of the traditional green.

The new turf was necessary to address wear and tear, as well as some deficiencies, in the artificial turf that is currently in place.

The blue turf will have orange-and-white end zone accents to highlight Canutillo’s traditional colors. A 30- to 40-foot logo of the Canutillo Eagle will be placed at midfield.

When complete, Canutillo’s football field will be one of just a handful of non-green football fields in Texas, and the first in the western part of the state.

Stop crying and lets just play some football.

I live in boise, Idaho and happen to be a Boise state fan. I think it is pretty sad that you have to result to "stealing" our turf color and design. You guys think real original let me tell you. Here's an idea for you...why don't you come up with some originality, and come up with your own color and design.
That's okay though...we all know who is the real boss and owner of the blue turf....BOISE STATE BRONCOS.

The Boise blue turf is not covered. It seems the local geese and ducks have learned to avoid the blue turf and they must pass it along to their migrating neighbors. I should know, I live just one block from the stadium. Maybe some of your kids will learn to love the blue so much that they might consider migrating here themselves. All southerners are welcome to play for Boise State, just as long as they are not preacher's kids. (Just kidding Mr. Newton)

I could not believe that this was the same school distict that laid off 23 teachers last month due to budget constraints. And then I remembered that the lay off was just a stunt pulled by the school district to get the voters to pass the bond... at no time did the school district discuss what other cost cutting intiatives they were implementing.

But, to come back the following month to CHANGE the field turf, regardless of the color and then say it was included in the bond? WHY?

I THINK THE NEWS MEDIA SHOULD QUESTION THE NEED FOR A NEW TURF ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD. HOW MANY TEACHERS HAVE LOST THERE JOBS BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MONEY OR HOW MUCH ARE THE TAXES BEING RAISED ON THE PEOPLE IN THE DISTRICT. IS IT ME OR AREN'T THE SCHOOLS IN THE BUSINESS OF TEACHING THE KIDS AND HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN WITH THE LOSS OF TEACHERS.LEARNING CAME AHEAD OF SPORTS WHERE I WENT TO SCHOOL. IT SEEMS SILLY TO ME THAT IN THIS AREA YOU SEE SPORTS RECEIVING MONEY AND LEARNING COMES SECOND.

The only birds crashing on the blue in Boise were the Oregon Ducks!

Birds crashing on the Blue turf at Boise State is a myth. Bsu Alumni here and the field is never covered.

This is going to be awesome. Have pride people and invest in your community. Create a better community for your kids. I am sure all the students will be proud to say "Yep I go to Canutillo." Part of a community becoming better is looking better. Great leap in the right direction.

This is SUCH a waste of money. I think it's dumb when colleges do, now that high schools are following suit makes it an even worse idea. Just because new turf was needed doesn't mean you have to draw attention to yourselves. Bravo on this. How about giving the money to things that actually matter. You can get new turf without unnecessary spending.

It is a nice field but I thought the school colors were columbia and orange? That's going to look a little off in my opinion.

Oh my god. You people are unreal. The new turf was part of the bond election. If they hadn't bought a new turf you would be complaining that the district didn't keep its promise to buy a new turf. There's no winning with you guys.

The turf looks awesome. The kids will look great playing on it.

I went back and looked at all the articles about the bond and could not find one that mentions the field. I guess they call that transparency. I will say the state got the financial rating for Canutillo ISD correct "high", one of the worse ratings in the county.

Click on the project list and look on page 10. It's there.

Taxes keep going up, $5K a year!!! Way to go Murphey, I'm paying for a new football field, are you sure you don't need a raise as well!!!

Just a thought, can you recall a bond election?

The brilliant voters voted - this is the first thing they get for the new taxes! Great Job! Hope they incorporated the costs of a cover to keep migrating birds from committing suicide into the turf. Boise State had huge issues with this problem and have to keep their field covered.. Do a little research..

LOL...it is YOU that needs to do a little research! I'm from Boise and I can tell you that the birds diving into the blue turf is nothing but a myth. Of course, being the "eagle" that you are, you could always prove me wrong...(the turf is waiting for you).

Boise state has never covered the field, and never had issues with migrating birds.

You should do a little research yourself! BSU has NEVER had that problem and only people of VERY LOW intelligence EVER believed it in the first place. Additionally, you should check out Google Maps to see if BSU's field is "covered" or not. Do us all a favor: DO NOT REPRODUCE.

No they don't. I've been a student at Boise State for 3 1/2 years and have never once seen it covered. Do a little research.

Sorry to inform you but it is an Urban Legend that birds crash into 'The Blue' at Boise State and NO they do not cover it when not in use to protect the suicidal migrating birds. P.S. - the only birds that have been witnessed to truely crash and burn at BSU are the Oregon Ducks.

Um, I have lived in Boise for 15 years and am a Boise State Alumni and I can tell you for a fact that they do not cover their field. The duck and goose myth is just that.....a myth. The only ducks that have crashed on the Blue are the degenerate criminals they call a football team at the University of Oregon.

Boise State fan here. You do the reaserch, birds never dive into the feild. Has not happened, it's a myth made up by someone when they first put the blue in

Ummmm.. I live in Boise and can tell you this:
1. No dead birds on the blue
2. No cover used or needed.
3. Thinkin you should be the one to do some research!

the school should get out of dept first, is that why they wanted to raise our taxes

JP - I'm on the same side of this you are. Just a few weeks ago they were going to get rid of teachers. How many teachers do you have to get rid of to pay for this new field. I didn't see any mention of the cost. How did Canutillo HS do on TAKS/AYP this year?

FYI - I guess you missed it when all of the teachers were hired back because the TRE was passed! Also, if you really did your research the new field was listed on the CISD website DC2011 BOND project (different than the TRE) page 10 under school improvements. The old turf is falling apart - check it out!
