Black Friday is just two days away and El Pasoans are gearing up and getting ready to hit Borderland stores. But authorities say, this is also a prime time for thieves.

To better prepare you for the holiday shopping rush, here are some tips.

Stepping into the thick of shopping madness can be overwhelming and unfortunately dangerous. "We've even heard that people die, you know they're stepped on. So, we'd rather not even deal with it,” Luke and Adriana Van Pelt from Northeast El Paso said.

The El Paso Police Department and Bassett Place mall employees are urging shoppers to be vigilant. "Make sure you keep your money inside don't flash any money,” Marguerite Byers, the Marketing Manager of Bassett Place advised.

The safest form of currency on Black Friday are your credit and debit cards, police also advise.

"It's going to be crowded,” Ramon Martinez of Central El Paso told us, "You're going to see a lot of traffic, believe me."

Stick to the buddy system, make sure to keep your children close to you because they may get lost in the sea of shoppers. "Anything you put in your car make sure that you enclose it either in your trunk or pull a cover back on SUV's or so forth, hatchbacks,” Byers said.

Even though you're coming out with a steal, "Some stuff is really worth it,” Mario Nassri of East El Paso said. You want to prevent anyone from taking your armful of presents. "And just to try to go over there and get what my daughters need."

If you’re patient and can afford to pay a bit more, "No, I think I'm too old for that. I think I'll wait for the daytime,” Martinez explained. Waiting may be your safest and best bet.
