EL PASO (KTSM) — The Catholic community in El Paso will see some changes in their local parish leadership. Bishop Mark J. Seitz announced several priest changes throughout the diocese.
Nine parishes in the El Paso area will have new pastoral leadership and the reaction from parishioners was immediate.
"We knew that when we finally found a bishop, Bishop Seitz had promised that changes would come and change is a good thing it keeps the ideas fresh the leadership," Cathedral Principal Nick Gonzalez said.
"We are very surprised and excited we didn't know when it was going to come and it came this Saturday night when we were at mass of course whenever you have a change like this we're going to miss father Mariano who will be leaving." Parishioner Kerry McCullough said.
Bishop of El Paso Mark Seitz said the appointments came because of the great need in churches and that the changes come at the appropriate time.
"Change is always something that God can use its very often something we resist as human being its natural we wish things would always be the same," the bishop said.
For Cathedral High School's principal and other members the change brings new opportunities of growth.
"They share the same passion for justice the same passion for empowering people in the perish and I think that's going to continue and in fact just grow," Principal Gonzalez added.
"I believe change is always good in any kind of institution because if there is no change there is no growth and I am sure that father Trini is going to give us new growth," parishioner Ana O’Neil said.
Bishop Seitz sent a message to the Catholic community saying these new appointments are to strengthen the church and expand its mission.
"Embrace them love them it's never easy for a priest to change we need to really support them take good care of them and allow them to do their special work." Bishop Seitz concluded.
Most of these appointments of new priests will be effective on November 8. For more information you can visit the diocese website.
