After Lawsuit Over “Operation Stonegarden” is Settled

The Otero County Sheriff's Department has revised policies that now prohibit deputies from asking people about their immigration status while enforcing the law.

It's part of settlement between the Sheriff's Department, the Paso Del Norte Civil Rights Project and Border Network for Human Rights.

The two groups represent several families from Chaparral, NM, that claim their civil rights were violated by deputies who asked for documentation on immigration status. In some cases people were deported.

The settlement also requires deputies receive training on the new policy and the families be reimbursed for legal expenses.
