Today marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Chamizal treaty by President Lyndon Johnson and Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos which ended the long land dispute between Mexico and the United States, representatives of both sides of the border gathered in Ciudad Juarez not only to remember the 50th anniversary but to foster a good relationship.

Juarez Mayor Hector Murguia said the event went beyond just remembering

"In every step when we were in very bad times they were with us trying to help and give solutions so I think these types of events first give you memory" Mayor Murguia said.

El Paso and Ciudad Juarez are considered the largest border community in the world, that's why both cities will continue with the planning of new projects and the implementation of a common agenda.

"70 billion dollars’ worth of trade crosses our ports of entry and that's jobs created on both sides of the border so it’s important to us to do what we can to reduce bridge wait times and its important to make our area attractive" El Paso City representative Cortney Niland said.

Former El Paso mayor Ralph Seitsinger who was present at the treaty signing attended today's ceremony and spoke about how important it was at the time to start a friendly relationship between both countries, while Texas Senator José Rodríguez says the cooperation efforts also contribute by changing the perspective of the border and the region in other parts of the country.

"We hope that these events will project the more real life on the border that we get along on the border, that we're not a threat to one another that we are friends" Rodriguez said.

According to Niland meetings between both new municipal administrations in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso will continue over the next months.
