EL PASO - A former El Paso city representative has announced his bid for higher office.

Beto O'Rourke is challenging incumbent Congressman Silvestre Reyes for the democratic nomination in 2012. O'Rourke said he has great respect for the long-time congressman, but feels it's time for a change.

"I don't think this is all about me. This is about people wanting to see change. People are excited that for the first time in 16 years, we're going to have a contested democratic primary for congress and I love it. So, let's see where it goes from here," said O'Rourke.

The democratic primary is next March.

I'surprised that he is not running for some politcal office in San Francisco,CA....because lots of people of "his kind" live there. Plus, it is already legal to buy and sell marijuana in that city. He could provide them with a major change: Nullifying voting results which represent the will of the people.

Does Beto realize the wrath of the entrenched Democrats, and the all powerful Reyes allies, will do to derail his attempt? With this in mind, he must have a huge set of cojones, or very naive on his chances. He would be a fresh breath of life, after 16 Pelosi kissing years of our present rep. I wish him the best, and see if he can talk me out of my vote, at the present, its not for Reyes at all. Go to the polls with the anger the nation has towards congress. VOTE RIGHT

Yes Beto should win and bring Corruption to that seat. We can learn from his mommy and the Charlottes investigation.

O'Rourke says "he has great respect for the long time congressman but feels it's time for a change." Well Mr. young whipper snapper O'Rourke, change does not come by so easy. I also have a great deal of respect for Congressman Reyes and to me Mr. O'Rourke has a misguided way of showing his so called great respect. To me that is just O'Rourke's double talk and because of that and other positions that he has so stubbornly taken, he will not get my respect nor my vote. I will vote for Reyes.

Anything would be an improvement.

O'Rouke is not qualified to be the U.S. Congressman representing the 16th Congressional District of Texas. While on city council his position on overturning the vote of the people and other controversial issues will affect his chances. Too far to the left and radical for my taste.

Awesome!! It is time for a change! Beto, you got my vote!

This is seriously scary. This person came up with the most idiotic ideas while in city council and now he wants to seat in congress. I understand just about anybody could get elected to city council, because the past few years we elected non experienced naive and ignorant people but we are talking congress now. This person will never achieve what little his father achieved and I say that by what you proposed and said during your tenure with the city... please help

Beto O'Rouke should have run for mayor of El Paso first and clean house with all the corruption going on around town.
Then also left a good impression like bringing something nice for El Paso, something where people will always appreciate him and remember him for.
He reminds me of San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsome, but Beto is the better man better morals, just like his dad.
