Bel Air students win 1st and 2nd place at state firefighting competition
Two Bel Air high school seniors are the best in the state when it comes to firefighting.
Esperanza Delgado and Miguel Soltero spent this past weekend in San Antonio taking part in a criminal justice competition. This year was a little different though, organizers added firefighting to the list of categories and the students took the challenge head on. They competed against 300 other students in bunker gear, search and rescue and had to complete an obstacle course, all activities that El Paso firefighters take part in daily.
Delgado placed 2nd and Soltero came in 1st. They were mentored by El Paso firefighter and Ysleta ISD school board member Shane Haggerty.
After graduating this summer Delgado plans to join the navy before becoming a firefighter, while Soltero plans to head straight to the El Paso Fire Department's training academy.
