For more than a month, Beaumont Hospital wondered if diabetic patients were exposed to blood-borne illnesses like Hepatitis or HIV. Now we know. Sixteen of those diabetes patients have tested positive for Hepatitis B or C. That's out of more than 2,000 exposed to the illness.
This all started last month when Beaumont admitted it mismanaged an insulin needle program. Many patients were given injections from the same insulin pen.
Beaumont went public with what it did and went about trying to contact all diabetics who may have been exposed to Hepatitis or HIV.
The hospital talked to 94% of patients considered at-risk for the diseases. Of those patients, 61% agreed to be tested for the blood-borne illnesses.
Beaumont says it's unclear if the patients contracted Hepatitis from the improperly administered injections or if their hepatitis came from somewhere else.
