EL PASO- A local radio ad offers fantastic savings on groceries, but The Better Business Bureau has a warning for you. The radio ads are put out by a group called Consumer Advocate Response.

The commercial claims you can get $1,000 worth of discounted groceries by simply calling a phone number, but The BBB says this might not be such a great deal after all.

"I heard it on the radio and from some comments from my godmother about that thing that you call and they give you the grocery coupons and what not. Then, at first I was like well it's fun. I mean you get coupons and it helps. It makes sense,” said Luis Escalante.

"First of all, when you hear something that sounds too good to be true, it almost always is. So, let that be the first red flag,” said BBB spokesperson Annabelle Estrada.

The BBB warns that the company behind the ad charges $4 to process your credit card, $99 dollar sign up fee, and another $2 charge for every $10 in coupons, so the offer might not be such a great deal after all.

The BBB also wants to remind the public that you should never give out personal information to companies you are not familiar with.

"This includes your bank statements, your bank account numbers, your credit card number, your social security number. When people ask for this information, think three times about giving it to them,” said Estrada.

Many El Pasoans say that a misleading ad can take advantage of us.

"I think it happens to all of us. For example, we some offer on the TV or see some offer on the internet, and we are predisposed to just go ahead and do this because we are saving money supposedly, but in the end sometimes you think it's free, but in the long run we start getting charges,” said Jonathan Aldrete.

The BBB also says you can protect yourself by taking a few minutes to research a company on the internet before you sign up for anything.
