Now that the rain has subsided, many homeowners and businesses are hard at work cleaning-up after the storm's mess - and some of that clean-up includes repairing roof damages.

While you might have to wait until the rain stops to get your roof fixed, the Better Business Bureau says it's important to make sure the person you're paying is legitimate, and you should also know how to prevent damages from happening again.

Jose Ibarra, a resident of Central El Paso said his home and storage shed in the backyard fell victim to the rain and like most homeowners, he called a local contractor immediately.

"With all these rains, everything that we were storing inside got wet - clothes and furniture that we had to then take out yesterday," said Ibarra, "we don't have the money to make these repairs. It's a relief that the insurance company can pay for them."

"Have a professional, once again, contact them ahead of time, or the next day, but don't go up there trying to risk yourself and getting injured," said Jose Frescas, from Tri-Star Roofing and Construction.

While the extreme weather keeps them in business, the company recommends you have your roof inspected every 2 to 3 years to prevent future damages from happening.

"At least get a professional roofer, registered with the city and accredited with the Better Business Bureau to go up on the roof and see if there are any cracks," said Frescas.

Also, they said if you notice yellow spots or water spots on your ceiling, call a trusted roofer right away.

The BBB encourages you to get at least three different quotes from roofers before choosing a company.

They urge you to call the company's references and check to see if they're licensed with the state.

Also, be leary of high down payments, make sure to read your contract with the roofer thoroughly before signing, and finally find out if the company is properly insured.
