Battery Suspect Attempts to Take Officer's Gun

LAS CRUCES — A Las Cruces man is behind bars after a domestic disturbance call ends in a physical altercation with a police officer where he attempted to take his gun and pepper spray Thursday.
According to the report, Christopher John Butler, 31, had left the scene of a domestic disturbance call by the time police arrived. An officer drove to Butler's home on Hellenic Drive where Butler refused to cooperate with his demands. Butler then became physical with the officer, and tried taking his gun and pepper spray. The officer eventually overpowered Butler and placed him under arrest. is charged with three counts of battery against a household member, two counts of false imprisonment, two counts of resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, and one count each of battery on a peace officer and disarming a peace officer.
The officer was not seriously injured but Butler was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries he claimed he received while resisting arrest.
Detectives learned that on two occasions within the past week – on May 13 and May 17 – Butler physically assaulted his 35-year-old girlfriend and kept her from leaving their home. The woman had visible bruising about her face and was taken to a local hospital. Her injuries are not life-threatening.
