Plans to build a Triple A baseball stadium took another step forward. The El Paso city council voted five to three on Tuesday to continue negations to purchase the El Paso Times building and its two parking lots to build a new city hall. The current city hall building would be torn down to make room for the stadium. No costs have been publicly discussed, but the mayor says all parties have agreed on a purchase price.

Few obstacles remain to the deal. However, the league does have yet to officially approve the sale of the team. The city council will also still have to sign off on the plans again once all the parties agree to a deal in writing.

"The council is probably a little hesitant to make a deal and potentially move if we're not 100 percent sure the baseball team is coming to El Paso, and if they're not coming, there's no need for a stadium, and if there's no need for a stadium, there's no need for the demolition of city hall, and if you don't demolish city hall, you don't need those buildings," said El Paso Mayor John Cook.

Major League Baseball officials are expected to approve the sale of the Tucson Padres, which would allow the team to move to El Paso.
