Gang Members Convicted On Multiple Charges
After several delays, a judge is set to sentence six members of the Barrio Azteca gang this morning.
Late last year, a grand jury convicted Carlos Perea, Manuel Cardoza, Benjamin Alvarez, Eugene Mona, Francisco Herrera and Arturo Enriquez on charges of racketeering, extortion and making threats.
The gang started in the "Segundo Barrio" neighborhood of South El Paso in the mid 1980s as a way to unite hispanic prisoners in the area.
Over time the Aztecas grew, but the gang was dealt a severe blow in 2003 when the city created a gang injunction against them.
After the injunction, the city says gang members turned on each other and crime in the area began to drop.
The men will go before U.S. District Judge David Briones at 10:30 this morning.
