The Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley continues making progress in reducing the euthanasia rate at the shelter and has been increasing the number of animals adopted.

While we are in the dog days of summer the center has had a higher a adoption rate than this time last year and placed the shelter in the running to receive funds from the ASPCA and Rachel Ray $100K Challenge.

"I'm really confident that we can work together here in the last few days and we can come in the top 10," said ACSMV Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock.

The $100K Challenge consists of 50 shelters nationwide competing to increase the number of animals lives saved during the summer of 2012 compared to the same time in 2013.

The shelter with the biggest increase is awarded a grand prize of $100,000.

"We are currently 34 percent improved over last year," Vesco-Mock said.

The current standings place ASCMV at 12th with an increase of 276 animals saved.

"The goal is animals in forever homes," Vesco-Mock said.

The director added the money would greatly benefit the shelter for much needed repairs.

There are two kennels that need resealing on the floors and waterproofing the walls.

One of the kennels needs sound-proofing and there is overall work that still needs to be done at the shelter.

"It's not going to just help one animal or two animals it's going to help the masses that come through here everyday," Vesco-Mock said.

The challenge also awards money for community engagement by simply voting online for the shelter.

By visiting and scrolling down and clicking on the Animal Service Center, then voting for the center, it helps get the shelter closer to winning $25,000.
"We really need everyone out there to vote for our shelter," Vesco-Mock said.

The contest ends Saturday and leading up to the deadline the center will offer a $25 discount on adoptions.

On Thursday, Convergys Call Center will host an adoption fair.
