El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — Some student journalists at El Paso Community College got quite a surprise yesterday when the man they were speaking with was arrested mid-interview.
It turns out Chibauike Uke, Jr. was the man police were looking for in connection with a shooting on campus.
The 22 year-old allegedly fired a BB gun at a group of students. He missed, but shattered the window of a pickup.
He allegedly fled campus after the shooting but told police he returned to buy a book. That's when he was approached by the Tejano Tribune, which was interviewing students about campus safety in the wake of the shooting.
The reporters say they weren't sure what was happening when he walked away and toward police.
"I guess I was in shock when they started screaming or I just thought they were screaming at reporters because we were recording on the scene and maybe they didn't want us to get footage of that so I didn't know why they were going after him," said Viridiana Villa, the Layout Editor for the paper.
"As a journalist I just thought this is a good time to take photos. I had my camera in my hands so that's what I did, and my friend, she didn't stop recording," added Jesus Rodriguez, the student editor of the Tejano Tribune.
Uke is now facing two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, and campus police tell us he will likely be expelled.
