Phoenix - One immigrant group is already promising a legal fight for the tough immigration enforcement legislation singed into law today by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund says the measure, "launches Arizona into a spiral of pervasive fear, community distrust, increased crime and costly litigation."
The bill makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. And it also requires police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants.
Brewer, a Republican, signed the legislation despite criticism from President Barack Obama. He has instructed the Justice Department to determine if it's legal.
The governor says critics are "overreacting," adding that she won't tolerate racial profiling. She says Arizona has been "more than patient" waiting for Washington and that its "inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation."
