LAS CRUCES - The F&A Dairy located the West Mesa Industrial Park in Las Cruces has become the city's first solar-powered private manufacturing facility. In March, Sunspot Solar Energy began putting in an array of solar panels on the dairy's property. The array just began producing energy and now helps to power the dairy's water treatment facility. Four more arrays are expected to go online by the end of the year.

According to Sunspot Energy estimates, the addition of the solar panels will reduce the dairy's electric bill by approximately 1/3 each month. Federal Tax Credits reduce the initial cost of installing solar panels to businesses and homes, the credit is 30%. With the credit, Sunspot Energy figures show that the dairy will reach the "break even" point where the electric savings make up for the upfront cost of installing the solar array in about 7 years.

Sunspot Energy also does residential installations. Over the past 2 years, they have equipped 170 homes with solar panels in the Las Cruces area.
