Are You Washing Your Hands Properly?

EL PASO - You wash your hands every day, but are you leaving germs and bacteria behind? With cold and flu season here, you'd be surprised. That's why we put a couple of our employees to the test.

It seems so easy, but washing your hands is no easy task.

"Most people get their hands wet, rinse them off, and dry them," Glo Germ President Joe Kingsley said.

Last week we used Glo Germ, a substance that acts like real bacteria and glows under ultra-violet light, to show you how bacteria spreads. We infected the hands of a few people in our newsroom, and by the end of the day the germs had spread to doors, phones, and even other people's hands.

Next we wanted to show people how easy it is to not properly wash your hands, so we put our employees to the test. We had one employee rub the Glo Germs on like lotion, and we directed her to wash her hands like she normally would. After she dried her hands, we turned on the ultra-violet light.

"Eww, it's nasty. Can I wash my hands again," she asked.

Another employee repeated the same test, and when he was done we turned on the ultra-violet light again. Both employees found that not all of the germs on their hands washed down the drain.

"They're washing their hands, and they're always missing a spot," Del Sol Medical Center Nurse Pat Foret said.

Foret says missing spots can introduce germs and bacteria into your body, and that's a bad thing during the next few months of cold and flu season.

Through our tests, we found most people forget to scrub away the germs from the area around their fingernails and wrists. The Centers for Disease Control recommend frequent hand washing, using soap, and scrubbing everywhere for at least 20 seconds.
