The Town of Anthony has finished construction on their new substation and will officially begin work out of the new facility after a ribbon-cutting Thursday.

The substation is strategically located at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Richard White in order to help monitor parks in the area.

"It will make the people feel safer, the people that come to walk and play here so the police department can monitor the park," said Mayor Art Franco.

The plan is to have officers work their shifts from the new station, while at the same time having officers work out of town hall.

That's a luxury Franco didn't have when he first took office 20 years ago.

"We had like three cars," Franco said. "One time I had to borrow from Dona Ana County."

The department currently has 14 patrol cars and 16 officers and with better equipment it's been easier to retain their employees.

"It's not a revolving door for them anymore," Franco said. "They come here, they like Anthony and they want to stay here and that makes for a better police department."

Franco said the cost of construction of their newest building was kept low in large part to donations of building materials and furniture.

In the 20 years he has been mayor of Anthony, Franco said this has been one of the most exciting times for the department.
