A confession tonight in a deadly stabbing in Anthony, New Mexico.
Dona Ana County Sheriffs Deputies tell us that Manuel Ortega admits that he killed his roommate, Marcus Tucker, right in front of Tucker's two daughters.
Third Judicial District Attorney Amy Orlando tells us that the roommate situation was one of special circumstances. They are ex-family members because Ortega was previously married to a family member of Tucker. And when that marriage failed,"the victim was allowing the defendant to live with him pretty much as i understand it, rent free," said Orlando. "Mostly he said that he was upset about being thrown out and that at some point he grabbed the knife and he stabbed him. I don't think he remembers how many times he stabbed him but he does admit to stabbing him."
Orlando says that Tucker got fed up with the living situation and asked Ortega to leave. According to the Sheriff's office report, there was another person with Manny Ortega at the home where the argument started. That witness told Deputies that Ortega admitted to stabbing Tucker as they walked away from the scene.
Manny Ortega then hid the knife in a fast food bag, which was later found. Orlando says she knows for sure at least one of the two girls saw their dad get stabbed.
When asked about the mother of the children, Orlando said “ I can't really get into a lot of the family details now um of the victims..we do know that the grandma has stepped in and is helping out."
Orlando says that the case could take six months to a year for Ortega to go to trial. "It's the district attorney's goal and my goal to make sure that we try and move these cases along that we make sure there is swift justice."
Ortega was arraigned on murder charges this afternoon. The district attorney's office tells us he's held under a $50,000 bond.
Ortega has been previously convicted for burglary and shoplifting in 2007.
