New Mexico's Education Secretary recognized Anthony Elementary Monday afternoon as one the best schools in the state.

The school received an "A" grade this past July and ranks 5th among all schools in the state.

"These kids at Anthony Elementary, they know and they explicitly said I'm going to get a job, I'm going to go to college and I'm going to be successful in life," said New Mexico Education Secretary Hanna Skandera.

She visited with the students for about an hour and said their teachers are doing a good job of making sure they are equipped with the necessary tools to be successful.

"I think these teachers said no excuses, high expectations and let's make it happen and they did just that," Skandera said.

The school has 430 students from kindergarten up to 6th grade with 100 percent of students being hispanic and coming from mostly low income homes.

Principal Linda Perez said they're 5th best rank out of 831 schools is an accomplishment they are very proud of.
"We take great pride in proving to everyone that it can be done," Perez said.

Perez credits the school's success to everyone working together and taking responsibility.

"Failure is not an option," Perez said. "The students don't fail, we are the adults and if they fail we are the ones failing them."
