The Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley offered reduced rates on adoptions and waived fees for black pets on Black Friday but even then saw poor adoption totals.

The goal was to adopt about 75 animals with the day's Black Friday deals but fell short of that number considerably.

"To be quite blunt I'm going to have to euthanize tonight," said ASCMV Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock.

Vesco-Mock said they usually have people lined up outside for previous Black Friday events.

In 2012, the shelter adopted 60 pets that brought down the number of animals that had to be put down.

"We didn't have to euthanize for several days," Vesco-Mock said.

The facility is always at a hundred percent capacity and saw more than 20 animals came in on Thanksgiving Day.

With the high availability and low adoption rate, t's a sad reality for healthy animals that would much rather be running around in someone's back yard.

Tracy Alexander adopted a dog at the Petco adoption site Friday morning.

"I recently lost my pet after a lot of years and now she makes me happy," Alexander said as she held her new pet.

Alexander said the reduced fees for Black Friday were also an incentive to adopt immediately and save a life.

"She's going to be my best friend, Alexander said. "I'm going to take her everywhere with me."
