UPDATE: Tthe Albuquerque Police is reporting that Rico is still in surgery. The following statement was released on the department's Facebook page at approximately 2:00 p.m. 

"Veterinary medical staff is reporting that Rico sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and neck area. They are currently trying to remove a bullet from near his spine."

EARLIER:

Albuquerque Police reported that a K-9 dog by the name of 'Rico' was shot in the line of duty early Friday morning by a commercial burglary suspect.

KOB, reported that the armed burglary suspect was found dead Friday morning after the SWAT standoff. The suspect initially barricaded himself in a northeast Albuquerque storage trailer early Friday morning after shooting Rico near the area of Oakland NE and San Pedro.

Rico was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital and is currently in surgery. The Albuquerque Police will continue to update the public on Rico's status on their Facebook page throughout the day.

The situation is ongoing and will will continue to follow KOB and the Albuquerque Police on this developing situation.
