It was the busiest day of the year for airports across the nation and El Paso International airport. AAA said more than three million people will fly to their Thanksgiving destination and many will do so on Wednesday.

"It’s the one busiest day of the year," said Spokesperson Liz Bellgarde with the El Paso International Airport.

The airport has been preparing for months for the big crowds on the day before Thanksgiving. But, your holiday spirit can quickly turn into a nightmare if you miss your flight.

"We recommend that you check your flight status before heading to the airport. Check also the TSA 311 liquid policy for carry-on items when packing," said Bellgarde. "One of the most important is give yourself plenty of time. We want you to make your flight so arrive two hours before your departure time."

The Transportation Security Administration said you need to prepare before you arrive at the airport to make it to your gate on time.

The TSA's 311 liquid policy for carry-on bags said liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes must be 3.4 ounces or less and all bottles must fit in 1 quart size plastic bag and placed in a bin for screening.

The TSA also said if you bring food, such as pies and cakes on the flight, be aware it may need further inspection at security.

And when you get to security, have a U.S. Federal or state-issued photo ID and your boarding pass ready, remove liquids and large electronics from your carry-on baggage. Also, remember to remove shoes, outerwear and bulk jewelry.

Many of the people who leave on Wednesday will return on Sunday, so airport officials said you should prepare for large airport crowds that day and the rest of December, because of the Christmas holiday.
