Aggie spirit running high before NCAA Tourney game
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Aggie fever is catching on throughout Las Cruces in anticipation of the second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the New Mexico State Men's Basketball team.
Locally owned Sports Accessories at 250 Solano Drive had dozens of Aggie fans lined up outside their store trying to get a hold of one the 40 shirts the store gave away Wednesday afternoon.
"Whenever the Aggies win the WAC tournament we give shirts right before they play in the NCAA Tournament," said Owner Brian Cox.
The store has been busy selling Aggie t-shirts and other Aggie gear after the team won it's second consecutive WAC Championship Saturday.
"Thats pretty amazing cause it's tough to do things once and it's really really difficult to do them twice," said Aggie fan John Hudson about the team's back-to-back championships.
Hudson said he became an Aggie fan because of his wife and it's obvious the Aggie fever has spread throughout their home.
"From the WAC all the way to national champions, the whole thing," said 13-year-old Ian Hudson.
Cox said that kind of excitement has been good for business throughout the community with bars and pubs in town getting extra customers.
For his shop, he has seen sales of Aggie merchandise go up considerably.
"For us the Aggie sales have been through the roof," Cox said.
He said they have been working hard to meet the demand ever since the team won Saturday and made the WAC Championship shirts for the welcome home celebrations.
He added Sports Accessories will be open up tomorrow for any last minute shoppers and said a win Thursday would help business even further.
"I would go ballistic," the younger Hudson joked. "I would tear the whole house down actually."
