Affordable Care Act deadline extended
Monday, December 23, 2013 - 6:08pm

The Obama Administration has extended the deadline to sign up for health insurance coverage going into effect January 1st until Tuesday.

There has been a lot of confusion and headaches resulting in a backlog after technical issues with the website.

"We're trying to go into the computer and we can't," said Lower Valley resident Ernestina Morales. "That's our problem."

Morales and her husband have to Project Amistad to help complete the application process.

Since enrollment through the Affordable Care Act began on October 1st, Project Amistad has helped more than 500 people receive coverage.

"Every case is going to be different and every family that comes in here for our help will be dealing with different issues," said Lead Navigator Rosalva Hernandez.

Community Relations Manager Roy Ortega said it's been during the last month when they say they've had more success with the website.

"We have encountered very few problems for residents that are trying to get the assistance," Ortega said.

Ortega said there's a definite need with an estimated 225,000 El Paso County residents not having health insurance.

Residents like the Morales said they are receiving coverage for the first time since they retired and could use the insurance to help pay for doctor visits.

"We're trying to choose a good insurance that will be good for both of us," Morales said.

Navigators at Project Amistad help people find the best coverage by considering their income and also consider details like making sure a specific doctor is covered with the plan, while helping people get the most for their money as quickly as possible.

Morales said their goal is to get health coverage by January 1st.

"It would be a very Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to have health insurance," she said.

Project Amistad will open til noon Christmas Eve to help people meet the new deadline.

They typically have hour long appointments to help answer all questions.

People can still sign up for coverage up to the end of March without penalty.
