Day care isn't just for kids anymore.  Adult day care centers are a growing industry in some parts of Texas, including El Paso.

According the Texas Department on Aging and Disability Services, there are 26 licensed adult day care facilities in El Paso County.

According to the National Adult Day Services Association, there are 4,601 day programs in the United States.  Texas is home to more than 10-percent of those, with 471 facilities.

The New Horizons Adult Day Care opened in Central El Paso more than 17 years ago. At that time, it was one of two adult day care centers open in El Paso.

New Horizons Director Betty Marquez said she thinks part of the reason for the growing number of adult day cares is because there is an increased need.

"A lot of them (elderly) live with their children that are working and everybody works, and so they don't have anywhere to put their family member," she said.

Marquez said adult day care is one of the best alternatives.

"Studies have shown that an individual that comes to any kind of social setting, an elderly, especially to an adult day care where there is some kind of care, it will prolong, if they were ever to go into a nursing home, it would prolong it by at least 2 years, and most of them don't make it to a nursing home because it increases their quality of life," said Marquez.

Rosalva Rueda spends most of her weekdays at the La Victoria Adult Day Care Center on Delta.  She said it was just a few years ago when she felt depressed and lonely because she would stay home alone all day.  That's when her social worker suggested adult day care.

Rosalva said she has made countless friends, and has even found romance.

"We met last year and we're still going out. We're going on about a year," she said.

The average cost of adult day care rangers from $25 to $100 per day, depending on the services offered.  Medicaid covers some of those costs.
