El Paso, TX — The son of rights activist, Marisela Escobedo is speaking out about his mother's death, saying the wrong person is being charged with her murder. At a press conference on Wednesday, Juan Fraire Escobedo, said the suspect arrested in his mother's slaying is a "scapegoat" and that he knows the real person responsible for the crime. Marisela Escobedo was shot and killed in front of the Chihuahua government building in 2010. Her son Juan, is seeking asylum in El Paso. He said his uncle identified the alleged killer and has proof this was not the first attempt to kill his mother. Carlos Spector, the lawyer for the Escobedo family, says they have evidence that the alleged killer is a U.S. citizen and because of that, he says, Mexican authorities would need to extradite him, something Chihuahua officials don't want to do. We'll keep you updated on the case as details become available.
