EL PASO - This weekend many El Pasoans are taking the time to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Hundreds of people gathered today at the Abundant Living Faith Center for a special church service in honor of Memorial Day. People at the service told Local 4 News, honoring Memorial Day during church is special because religious freedom is one of the rights our men and women have died for.

We spoke to Charles Nieman, the pastor of the mega-church, and asked him why he felt it was important to honor Memorial Day during his service.

"It's important to stop and say thank you, to verbally say thank you and to give people the opportunity to say thank you to these men and women that have served our serving and those who gave their lives so we can live in this world we live in today," Pastor Charles Nieman said.

We also spoke to former military members who attended the service. They agreed, Memorial Day is an important time for people to remember our military members.

"Particularly to those who have paid the ultimate price. This is a day that we set aside to recognize them and of course the families are always important in that respect. They make sacrifices on our behalf as well," David Broadmay said.

"Every day we need to be reminded that we live the way we do because we are a free nation, and that started with a war basically," Joel Braymen said.
