Absentee Voting Down in Doña Ana County

Absentee Voting Down in Doña Ana County
Friday, November 2, 2012 - 8:09pm

Early voting ends Saturday in New Mexico. In Dona Ana County turnout is roughly on par from four years ago. That's no surprise to election officials, but what is surprising is absentee voting. Only around 2,000 ballots have been mailed in this year. That's down from about 6,000 at this same time in 2008.

"I can only surmise it's because there are 39 voting convenience centers where you can go anywhere to vote. Perhaps people realize now they can go vote on lunch time without having to travel back home. It's the only answer i can think of," said Lynn Ellins, Doña Ana County Clerk.

Lynn Ellins is running for re-election this year. He's up against Republican Dolores Lucero Connor in the race for County Clerk.
