With Thanksgiving just one week away, AAA issued its annual holiday travel forecast. This year, AAA projects that just fewer than 44 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles, down slightly from last year.

Ninety-percent of those traveling will be driving to their destinations and the average distance traveled is projected to increase to 601 miles.

Good news for those taking to the roads this Thanksgiving, gas prices are expected to be the lowest this year since 2010.

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gas nationwide was $3.22 which was down 21 cents from last year. The price of gas across Texas was $3.01 which was a dip of 15 cents from last thanksgiving and in El Paso its $2.96, a drop of 34 cents.

AAA, though, is projecting all travel will be actually down this year because the economy still isn't where it was.
"Things such as the unemployment rate and housing market have, indeed, improved but not enough to change people's travel intentions," said Marshall Doney with AAA.

AAA also predicts air travel will be down from last year. Still, more than three million people will fly to their thanksgiving destination.

The Wednesday before thanksgiving will be the busiest travel day with more than one-third of all travelers departing that day.
