EL PASO- A small, makeshift memorial is the only remnant of yesterday's tragic accident that took the lives of both Maria Gomez and her niece Jennifer.
Family members say the pair was extremely close, as they try to deal with the loss of two of their own.
"My best friends. Honestly, the most beautiful people I've met in my life," says Evette Patterson, Maria's daughter and Jennifer's cousin.
Maria Gomez and Jennifer Gomez, both killed after their car collided with a school bus Tuesday morning.
"She said I'll see you later and I told her see you later sister. I don't want to believe it. I don't. It hurts," says Andrea Quintana, Maria's niece and Jennifer's sister.
El Paso Police say Maria ran a red light, just before eight in the morning. She died at the scene. Jennifer died a short time later at Del Sol Medical Center.
"It was a surprise to us for them to say she ran a red light because she's such a cautious driver, she's never even had a ticket," Patterson told us.
The day after the crash, a strange morning in the Gomez house. It's a time usually spent as a family, now missing two of its members.
Shock and disbelief prevail, as the family tries to grasp a monumental loss.
"I'm going to miss both of them so much. so, so much," Quintana said.
Family members told us that Jennifer planned on studying dance after high school.
Yesterday was supposed to be the first day of an internship where she taught local elementary school students how to dance.
