A 79-year-old man was hit and killed while walking to a Las Cruces hotel from a nearby restaurant shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday evening.

According to the Las Cruces Police Department, the man walked from the Hotel Encanto, located at 705 S. Telshor, to the restaurant, and was returning to the hotel when he crossed Foothills Rd. and fell to the ground in the westbound lanes of traffic.

He was hit by a 24-year-old woman driving a Chevrolet HHR.  The victim was taken to Mountain View Regional Medical Center where he died shortly after.

Police said the man was not in a crosswalk.  It is unclear why, or how, he fell.  He has not been identified.

The woman who hit the victim was not injured.  No charges have been filed.
