A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck just west of Los Angeles on Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, centered about 6 miles north-northwest of Westwood and about 15 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, happened at 6:25 a.m., according to the USGS.

Earlier, the USGS said the magnitude was 4.7.

Minutes after the earthquake, NewsChannel 9 spoke via telephone with a native El Pasoan who lives near Los Angeles and felt the quake.

Maria Lacagnina lives in Oak Park, CA, which is 30 miles north of Los Angeles.

She said it was still dark outside when she felt the jolts early Monday morning.

"It was a pretty big jolt, a couple of big jolts," she said, "I was actually praying for my sister who is having a CAT scan today, and I was asking for some kind of sign, and all of a sudden this earthquake hit. It was really shaky."

Lacagnina said she did not go outside, but checked inside her house to make sure everything was okay.  She did not have any damage.

"It's nothing like the Northridge earthquake in 1994, but it was a big jolt, 2 big jolts," she said.

Lacagnina has lived in California for 25 years and experienced the Northridge earthquake, which was a 6.7-magnitude temblor in Los Angeles on January 17, 1994.  It now stands as the second costliest disaster in U.S. history, after Hurricane Katrina, according to AccuWeather.

Lacagnina was concerned about aftershocks "We're still waiting for an aftermath, sometimes we get more earthquakes after an earthquake," she said.
