EL PASO - A parent's worst nightmare came true for an East El Paso mother. She found her 4-year old son face down in a pool, and now he is dead.

Screams coming from a house in the 8400 block of Hopewell echo past the police tape that surrounds the home. We're told around 10:30 Sunday morning a mom looking for her 4-year old son found him face down in the water of their backyard swimming pool.

"It's an unfortunate circumstances. The child woke up and was playing like any other four year old would, watching TV. The parent went to check on the child, and the child wasn't in the living room where she thought," Police Spokesman Mike Baranyay said.

Baranyay told us the boys mom pulled him out of the water and tried to revive him before calling 911. Firefighters showed up and tried to save the boys life as well, but in the end the 4-year old was pronounced dead. Now Crimes Against Persons is investigating.

"We don't want to paint the picture that charges are pending, but we also don't want to take anything for granted. We're going to conduct the investigation as in any other death investigation," Baranyay said.

Police tell us there was no fence surrounding the pool, and there was no cover over the water.

"In general terms, obviously a fence is a preferred safe guard as is a cover for a pool, but the bottom line is this kid has died. Was it preventable? Maybe, but the reality is kids are kids, and it's nearly impossible to supervise them 24/7," he said.

Our cameras were rolling as what appeared to be a family member arrived at the home unaware of what happened. She was pulled inside by the mom and moments later you hear more screams that now echo the tale of tragedy for a grieving El Paso family.

Police said the family didn't want to talk about what happened. Of course, we'll continue to follow this story.

What a horribly written article. Badly written and, even worse, the family that has suffered this terrible tragedy is treated with no respect. I'm appalled. My heart and my deepest sympathies go out to this family. Please know that your El Paso neighbors have you in their prayers.
