$3,000 watermelon being sold across the world
Japan (NBC NEWS) — A popular summer treat is fetching some big bucks in Japan.
A watermelon sold Monday in Northern Japan for more than $3,000.
It's a famous "densuke" watermelon with black skin.
The variety is grown only on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido.
It's denser and sweeter than its green cousin.
It was sold at the first watermelon auction at the island's main wholesale market.
The densuke watermelon is often given as a present, but people will have to wait a bit longer for their gifts this year.
Growers say this summer's crop will ship late due to cold temperatures in spring.
