EL PASO - Police have issued more than 3,000 citations to motorists who have violated the city's new cell phone ban.

The ordinance bans cell phone use while driving except when hands-free devices are used.

Enforcement began after a one month public education campaign.

During the first six months of enforcement, police wrote 3,211 citations for ordinance violations.
