Women played a key role in this year's election as both President Barack Obama and his opponent Mitt Romney recognized them for their roles in society.

A record number of women ran for political office in 2012. More women than ever will serve in the U.S. Senate at 19 so far.

Voting officials say 141 women ran as candidates for U.S. House of Representatives.
