EL PASO — Democratic primary win for O'Rourke received a lot of national attention, but not just for defeating an eight-term congressman. Much of the coverage revolves around his alleged support in exploring other ways to change drug policy.
On Wednesday O'Rourke spent his first day as the elected Democratic seat for the 16th district congressional race.
He says he feels great and is happy to be part of the change that El Paso wants.
As for the national attention he's getting on Huffington Post, he says the media loves to sensationalize.
"But what I've pledged to El Paso is that I'm not going to Congress with the mission of changing drug policy in this country," O'Rourke said. "I'm going up to represent the interest that I heard as I went door to door and those are the economy, high unemployment, doing better for our veterans an ending public corruption."
O'Rourke went on to say he plans on being a constructive player in whatever policy replaces the one we have in place today and is good for the border, good for el paso and is good for the country.
